Annadaan—the sacred act of offering food to the needy and to visitors—is revered as Mahaadaan, the highest form of charity, according to the teachings of Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru.

At Santhigiri Ashram, Annadaan is more than the distribution of food—it is a sacred dialogue of humanity, a living embodiment of the Ashram’s core ideals of compassion, equality, and unity. In this spiritual context, every shared meal becomes an offering of love and service, transforming nourishment into an act of divine grace under the guidance of Swami Gururethnam.

In accordance with Guru’s principles, every guest at the Ashram is first offered food before engaging in any spiritual conversation, affirming the belief that bodily sustenance is a prerequisite for inner awakening and spiritual growth.

Across the main Santhigiri Ashram and its 30 branches in Kerala and beyond, three wholesome meals are served daily, feeding over 3,000 individuals each day, uninterrupted for decades. This massive Annadaan effort is meticulously carried out by dedicated volunteer devotees, who serve community meals in a prayerful and serene atmosphere, seeking universal peace and well-being.

The food offered, known as Prasadam, is regarded as ‘God’s Essence’. Devotees are encouraged to receive it with reverence, understanding it not merely as physical nourishment but as a vital channel of spiritual energy and divine connection.

In essence, Annadaan at Santhigiri Ashram represents a powerful spiritual and social commitment—a compassionate humanitarian service that nourishes both body and soul, and stands as a profound expression of Guru’s timeless message of equality, service, and sacred charity.
